Conversations
A nice little Saturday afternoon event as we strolled through the stories and pictorial descriptions of people’s journeys, courtesy of Art in the Park’s outreach session, whilst drummers, singers and dancers brought the sounds, colour and energy of Africa to Walworth and encouraged the audience to embrace the vigour and join in. Off to the Caribbean as Helen reprised her story of stowing away on HMS Windrush to find her brother in England, to be broken hearted for several years, only to discover him at Lords in 1950 in the happy scene of the W. Indies beating England for the first time - as you do! Then our audience member, Laura, recited her coming to England in 1957 from Jamaica and what happens when you get into a bed which is so cold it feels wet…
Andrea and Cecilia from Art in the Park collected stories of journeys from members of the public whilst holding a Conversations event around Walworth. Their gallery of drawings and stories of journeys was showcased at the event at Pembroke house, viewed by the attendees. The Jamaican Stinking Toe Fruit (or “Tinking Toe Fruit”) excited much interest!
Led by Henri, the Kaago crew banged out rhythms, Soulamine sang and Krystal whirled and gyrated in an amazing dance performance and encouraged the audience to join her.
Helen, the stowaway on HMS Windrush, explained her travels to find her brother, Laura, told of her journey to England in 1957, and the shock of the cold, grey “Motherland” and a good time was had by all.
Then we cleared up and went home. Chatting happily as we left.
